Popular Post GPSguru
Having not been out for 8 weeks, today we took advantage of a short weather window. The temp was -1c this morning when I left in to pick up Kyle, so that we could launch at 8:00am. I was going to be just a morning trip as Kyle now has a part time job and starts at 3pm. We arrived at the slip at 07:30am and launched into the local sea mist, the air temp being 1c, however, once through the harbour and out into the navigation channel we were treated to a beautiful cloudless blue sky. I gave Kyle the option of where to go, and he wanted inshore fishing at the Orestone and the Mudstone ledge. The sea forecast was bang on, with almost flat calm and a slight NW breeze. Very soon we were at the Orestone and Kyle was straight into an OK Bass of about 2.5lb. I quickly followed with a couple of Mackerel, but no sign of the marauding shoals of whiting. Kyle also had a couple of Mackerel and then I had a piece of weed that was fighting back, and soon landed a jumbo Squid, that promptly soaked me with a water jet as I lifted it out of the water. We moved on out to the Mudstone ledge, where the water goes from 40ft to 160ft off the ledge. Here Kyle had a poor Cod and I had a decent whiting of about 1lb. Here there was no sign of Mackerel (unusual) and shoaling Whiting, however, the water temp is still 13.5C, so maybe a bit warm for Whiting. We motored back to the Orestone, which is just a short trip of 5Nm across the bay, and we were joined by a couple of Dolphins. Once back on the Orestone I noticed 5 boats anchored on the Northern side, so that means there must be some Codling about. This mark is known for Codling, although in recent years fish to 20lb have been caught, but it is very unusual to see that many boats and the mark. This time we fished the back of the Orestone for a couple more Mackerel, and I also had a half decent Tub grunter. All too soon it was time to head back in, but nevertheless a decent day of mixed specie fishing. The trip back to the slip was uneventful at a steady 30kts, arriving back at 12:30. So, the numbers, we had a total trip of 25Nm and landed 7 Mackerel, a Bass, a Squid, a Poor Cod, a Whiting, and a Tub Gurnard ……………. The red reflection is the early morning sun.......... The squid ......... The orange glow is a reflection from the bucket, I am not sure if I like the iphone 14 pro max camera ! Tub .......... The back of the Orestone............... JDP
Did the squid get you with ink or just water ? There are times when I regret catching squid, especially when they ink the boat which then bakes into everywhere on the boat, including the electronics!!!!! Just water, but here was plenty of ink in the cool box, which washed out OK. JDP

It tends to wash off if you get it before it dries on but here things dry quickly and often when you get onto a good patch of squid you don't want to stop to clean the boat!!!!!. We've had times where three of us were catching two or three at a time and the boat soon turned black!!!! GPSguru
Andy135
Great session and nice pics. That phone of yours seems to take an artistic pic, or at least it ramps up the colour saturation. Either way, a good, productive trip. Well dangled. #notjealousatall...much

Yes, I need to take a look at it to find out why. My old iphone 11 pro max used to take very good pics, Kyle now has that phone 👍

The wife already had a full roast organised, so I lobbed it in the freezer for bait, as squid has to be eaten fresh to get the best from it.
