mike farrants
Saturday saw the big squid meet hosted by Chesil bait n tackle = Meet and chat tactics in the shop lunchtime - tutorials on the pier in the afternoon then the competition from 5pm - 10pm rules of the comp were one rod each, up to 3 squid jigs, biggest squid - by longest mantle length wins £150 voucher for the shop We got the pier at 4pm to secure a space - sadly not a prime space - but good enough. within no time people were catching - most squid came during dusk - with a noticeable drop off after dark. about an hour in someone pulled in a a monster 49cm - and that kind of killed it a bit as no one else really bothered measuring after that. however no one knew they had put on 2nd 3rd and 4th prizes. I ended up just missing out on the prizes with a couple at 29cm, all mine fell to a Cweights Pink and purple glow Jig but Tim came 2nd with his first ever shore caught squid at 33cm. £20 voucher for him! His took a Cheap Fladen/ebay £1 jig - just goes to show you don't need £15 yamashitas! people were landing 10 or more over the course of the evening - and many people were catching their first squids - which was great to see. a great atmosphere, good fun, only downside was people didn't know there was runners up prizes to go for - i'm sure we had some people not bother weighing in. the boat comp on Sunday was cancelled due to storm Ashley - hopefully will be re-scheduled. i had squid rings on sunday instead! Odyssey
Looks like a lot of fun. We don’t get enough to target squid up here… I did take Pip for a walk on the beach Sunday and saw some lovely bass caught, made me want to get some shore gear again and have a go myself! mike farrants
have you tried for squid there? they are everywhere this year in huge numbers - lit up harbours especially good - (weymouth, portland, torquay, plymouth, Portsmouth, Southampton, Brighton, all piers, breakwaters, rock marks, coves, etc) and off the boat - deep water holds them all the time! I don't see why they wouldnt be over by you! especially cuttle if nothing else!
Malc
I have always wanted to try up here but the amount of debris in the water is terrible. Will have to give it a go sometime soon.
