River tamar

Evening all,

I’m venturing out into the tamar this Friday evening. For those who haven’t fished the river before, it’s a deep dredged river (up to 30m deep) with steep inclines up into shallower waters. There are also pockets of depth throughout as show in the below picture.

I’m hoping for some early cod or some bass alongside the normal whiting and pouting showing.

My ask is what would be the best approach?

Fish the deep? Fish the shallows? Long trace line? Drift or anchor?

I know it’ll be difficult to answer for sure and I’m planning to try a varied approach but any early help that formulate an initial plan would be greatly recieved.

Top photo area only you are likely to be moved in the other two. Middle one is Thankes depot pier and is basslet and pollock area as my FIL used to fish from the pier (security) and bottom is where they used to put old ships like the Eagle and Ark Royal and patrolled by police.

Is it not big tides this weekend? That stops you drifting and you will have to be careful anchoring if you need to shift because of other traffic etc?

2-3 small or 1-2 bigger squid, 6/0 sakuma manta extra with a circle or semi circle above as a pennel rig and deffo 60lb down your way as we don't get slimy snakes up here.

I’d be trying up the tamar river. Also tey off Devils bridge.

Ive done my skippers ticket down there and a lot commercial traffic in the river, better off trying to drift the sound by drakes island or anchor up down there to see what’s about
