WiFishing Posted November 22, 2024 Posted November 22, 2024 I have a Standard Horizon GX1500E. It transmits but does not receive. All other functions work. Seen several posts that the problem is the ceramic filters. I have identified them but cannot source them or an equivalent. Then make and part number is TOKO A50EF. Does anybody know where to get these. Tried the usual suspects RS, CPC, Farnell. Any help much appreciated. Cheers Quote

Saintly Fish Posted November 23, 2024 Posted November 23, 2024 I agree with @daio web, a vhf is your best chance of helping all goes tits up and should not be something to scrimp on. That also goes for the antenna. If it were me I'd be replacing both! I realise that it's not a cheap operation and I don't say it off the cuff, but to get a repair and then find it happens again could cost lives. Quote
Odyssey Posted November 23, 2024 Posted November 23, 2024 (edited) Hiya, I’ve tried searching my usual spots and no-one seems to have any. It’s best to get it tested properly or perhaps replace? I’ve just won a VHF on eBay for £100, includes a full AIS receive as well so there are bargains to be had 🙂 Edited November 23, 2024 by Odyssey Quote
Gordmac Posted November 23, 2024 Posted November 23, 2024 Had a problem like that years ago, bad connection in the Mike plug. Quote

Sent me a part number for a replacement filter. I queried them about that as it was a 450KHz filter and they explained why it was that frequency. They did also warn that there could be other causes for the receive fail. VHF has already been replaced. This will be a backup if the filter is the problem. Now the hard bit putting it in. I can see why the cost of this repair is so close to the price of a new set. Thanks for pointing me to them. Excellent response for such a small sale and potentially stopping me purchasing anything. Odyssey Posted November 27, 2024 Posted November 27, 2024 Hot air gun and tweezers to remove it. Ger some solder wick to clean the pads up. Use solder paste on the pads, hot air gun again to reflow the joints and hopefully you’ll be back in buisness 🙂 Quote

Cheers Ceramic filters replaced the older crystal lattice filters as they are generally more reliable. Give these guys a call, and they will match it to a more modern and readily available replacement, I expect the filters to be about £10 ish, although some of the narrow band filters can be £50 (yours isn't) https://shop.technofix.uk/pack-of-3-ceramic-filters-ltm455h-ltm455e-ltm455g-for-yaesu-ft-857-ft897 EDIT: Whoops, just read the whole thread and you have done that. In a previous life, I was a radio communications design and systems engineer. Best replaced using a manual solder sucker and a fine iron tip.
