JonC Posted December 13, 2024 Posted December 13, 2024 I need to wrap my stern tube with a bit of glass to make a watertight seal but with this weather which is to be expected at this time of year I’m thinking it’s too cold outside. What are my options? I could tent up a bit with a heater but I’m worried about condensation. Suggestions please. Quote
Odyssey Posted December 14, 2024 Posted December 14, 2024 For small patches add a bit more Catylyst (2% is usually best) and use a hair dryer to activate it. A hot hair gun is too severe. daio web and JonC 1 1 Quote
JonC Posted December 14, 2024 Author Posted December 14, 2024 IThis is the area, from what I can work out the tube is bonded into the hull after the boat comes out of the mold. A few years ago I fingered some sikaflex around it but it appears to have come away around the top. I plan to grind a strip about 25mm around it then layer a couple of strips of glass around it. Another concern is that the constant vibration may cause stress on the glass fibre, so I’m also considering grinding out a smaller band and using sika 292i on it. Quote
daio web Posted December 15, 2024 Posted December 15, 2024 that does not look good john is it where the stern tube houseing comes though the boat has your cutlass bearing gone i would be looking to be putting 7 to layers in a much bigger area than an inch away from that if that comes apart in the water you could end up loosing bud 👍 Quote
