JonC Posted January 9 Posted January 9 I bet the seagull engine will burn at least twice the fuel as a modern 4 stroke. Also the 2 stroke oil isn’t cheap if you buy proper stuff. Quote

I’m sure I’ve seen small (5-6hp) units for sale for about £500. Fuel cost is a massive consideration for any engine purchase. If you are smoking twice as much fuel then you will soon be worse off. Quote

JDP Posted January 9 Posted January 9 (edited) I had a seagull outboard, the first outboard I ever owned. Heavy on 2 stroke oil which is bad for the environment, oiled up the plug when running at idle or low rpm. Struggled to get it started once it had been run and warmed up. Pull cord dangerous for anyone behind you when pull starting and wasn't actually that great on fuel which I had to fill while out on the water most trips in choppy conditions. While parts may be available on eBay, you can keep that, I would rather not have to keep buying bits off eBay to keep one running. Bonus point being how fit it kept me pulling that cord until I got it started. In comparison, a 2hp Honda air cooled outboard. No flushing needed, great fuel economy without two stroke oil stink and oil trails on the surface of the water. Able to be used in freshwater dams where 2 stroke engines are banned. No whipping people in the face each time you start the thing and starts first pull hot or cold. Plug covered under cowling not exposed to the elements. Engine rotates full 360 so no need for gearing for forward and reverse, simply rotate the engine backwards to go in reverse. Light and easy to carry, reliability and resale value, virtually sell them for what you buy them for without any need to buy spares off eBay. There's a simple reason seagull engines are no longer made, if they were better than other similar sized outboards they would still be in production, people want more reliable efficient clean running outboards. https://www.tackletour.com/reviewhondabf2d.html Edited January 10 by JDP daio web 1 Quote

As an emergency aux it'll do. I thought maybe you were thinking about it being your main. Quote

They look exactly the same but are made from inferior materials with poor design tolerances. It’s nearly always best to go OEM or risk fitting cheap crap that doesn’t last and then having to do the same thing again very shortly. JDP 1 Quote
