Popular Post thejollysinker
I took my friend Aaron out for his first trip on a 'small' boat on the 14th and as he's a bit nervous around water, the forecast looked good to hopefully make it a nice day out without the usual bobbing about like a cork. We got set up quite early and headed straight out to the Hope's Nose area for a few drifts to bag some macks which had been plentiful.... but not today. Aaron did however manage to bag a baby Tub Gurbard on his jig which he was pleased with as it's a new species for him this year in our FB Species hunt group. After a few unsuccessful drifts we moved out to reef and had a go there. On the second drift we hit a sweet spot and bagged a fair few macks varying in size from joeys to big eaters. Once we had enough for bait we headed off to a wreck called The Emstromm and had a few drifts over that but the only fish we managed was a 1lb Pollack for Aaron, again, a new one for him. After that we went out to another wreck (forget the name) but all we could manage was a few macks. As the current was now slowing to a crawl we decided to find a spot to anchor for the rest of the day. Eating lunch on the move, within 25 mins we were over a mark that looked promising so we dropped the anchor and settled down with some big baits over the back, a scratching rig my side and Aaron kept his jigging rod going on the other side. Our mackerel flappers were just getting mullered by doggies time and again which was very frustrating. The scratching rig produced.... yes, doggies! The jigging rod however produced a steady stream of baby Scad, Grey Gurnards, tiny tings and yet more mackerel. We had a great day out and Aaron managed five new species for his list so he was pleased with that. I managed to add a Scad to my list. A mackerel dinner the following day was delicious as always 😋 The weather couldn't have been better. It was really hot and by mid afternoon there wasn't even a whisper of wind to help keep cool. I've never seen the sea so flat out there. A mist bank rolled in temporarily and ended up along the shoreline in the distance. It looked a bit surreal. Not sure if the high pressure had an effect on the bottom fishing but there were no other decent fish, just the doggies.... either that or I'm just shit at picking marks to try 😏 Try again soon hopefully with some different tactics/marks 🙂 GPSguru, JonC, Dicky and 3 others
GPSguru
Well done Gary, at least you got out in the sunshine and caught a few fish. Sometimes Long Quarry very close in will give you some Mack when Hopes Nose seems fishless. thejollysinker

Andy135
Lovely report! Those conditions look perfect for taking a newbie boat angler out in. And you let him catch more fish than you - top skippering! 👍 thejollysinker
JDP
Catching bunches of mackerel is way better than strings. Glamour conditions out there. thejollysinker
