Big seas

We went for a walk yesterday afternoon to South Shields, our local ish beach, as my wife collects and uses sea glass. The sea was dying away and as we were walking I ended up collecting loads of beads and daylights (just the plastic parts) and other useful bits and pieces. There were quite a few dead fish about, whiting, flats, sprats, sandeel and a decent sized rockling too.

The pier, a mile long, was locked and you can see the waves coming over the end. It was bigger Thursday and more waves were breaking over the lighthouse.

There were some surfers in the river as there is a big reef called the black middens and the sea was breaking over it, there was even one SUP surfer too! Brave guys. The sup surfer is the small black dot in the middle of the photo, the larger dark blob is one of the channel markers. Sorry for the grainy picture but my phone zoom is rubbish.

Yeah to both.

I've seen big seas do the same up in Scotland but mainly shellfish. There were a few cormorants in the shallow water on the river side doing well but you could see that they were struggling too as even there the surf was 8' or so with bigger rollers every now and again.

The surfers must have known the area and the risks as we were speaking to a couple in the pub who surf and they say it is supposed to be good but very hairy at times

nothing wrong with surfers - but you do need to know the conditions, tides, rips and reefs.

important to gain local knowledge ahead of paddling out - no shame in asking. looks hairy there though you're right!!

I pulled a guy out of the surf once, he looked in trouble and when i asked if he needed help he sheepishly gargled "yes" - i put him on my board and paddled him back in.
