Popular Post JonC
We got to the marina just before 7am, it took us about 15 minutes to clear the ice off the screen and get ready for the run out. We weren’t in a great rush as it was dead low and on the big tides the creek nearly drys out. It made fairly competitive conditions being dark with a frozen screen and 18” of water under the boat. We pushed out about 25 miles East and parked up in about 70’ of water in the Black Deeps, one of the main channels that runs from Harwich out to sea. The weather was awful, a totally different day to the forecast with a fairly decent chop in the water. After a bite less hour of being thrown around we pulled up the hook and headed North to the Middles, this was more comfortable but just as bad in fishing terms. So another move took us across to Clacton, where we fell in the line of charter boats that were anchored. We caught a few whiting there and a single Roker, (raja clavata) which was pretty small so it went back. They are spawning at the moment so best to give them a chance. Once the tide started running out I struggled to get the anchor to grip which was a first for me, I had loads of rope out but the hook just didn’t want to set. We tipped it after another hour, and headed to The King’s Head in Bradwell village for a couple of pints of Morreti. All in all a fairly expensive unproductive day, we burnt about 100lts of diesel for a few fish that we could have caught outside the marina, but you never know until it’s too late.
