MarkT Posted May 26, 2021 Posted May 26, 2021 Help needed please... I have a tohatsu 50hp 2 stroke. The problem is I'm loosing power and can't get over 3000rpm. It runs fine then all of a sudden it doesn't sound right and then I can't get over 3000rpm. It's been serviced recently spark plugs filters etc. I'm starting to think it could possibly be the ht leads or fuel. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks. Quote

Andy135 Posted May 26, 2021 Posted May 26, 2021 @suzook12 should be able to help here. Guessing you've already tried the obvious e.g. getting a spark at the plugs and clean filters etc? How old are the fuel lines? If they're getting on a bit they can sometimes break down inside and block the flow of fuel with higher revs. MarkT 1 Quote
suzook12 Posted May 26, 2021 Posted May 26, 2021 As above if it happened directly after being serviced. Get the engineer to look at it Could be a faulty fuel filter being too restrictive, could be a spark plug (got caught exactly like that when jetting the lads crosser recently, ran like it was rich, turned out to be the plug...... Run it at it's limit somewhere safe, then pull plugs for colour check. All plugs black/oily- ignition fault All plugs white- fuel starvation One plug black/oily- faulty plug One plug white- faulty/blocked injector If it looks like an ignition fault, check correct voltages getting to ECU, may be as simple as corroded wire/terminal I'm not entirely up on the fuel system of the tldi's but I guess air pressure can come into play here as well. Chances are it will be something more basic tho.... MarkT and Saintly Fish 2 Quote

Depending on the age, most were 3 cylinders with Carbs Does it have Carbs or is it TLDI ? (Direct Injection) Edited May 27, 2021 by GPSguru MarkT 1 Quote
Popular Post MarkT Posted May 28, 2021 Author Popular Post Posted May 28, 2021 Thanks everyone for taking the time to reply. I think I've gotten to the bottom of it, I did the service myself and I thought I had the gaps on the spark plugs correctly but on closer inspection the gaps looked too small so I rectified it to a bigger gap going by the manufacturer's guide. I ran it for a good while then took it to sea where I was getting the right revs and the engine sounded like its old self. So hopefully that has been the problem, I'm about to head back to the boat to run it again, I'll let you know if there's any problems. Thanks again, really appreciate your advice guys.👍 GPSguru, Andy135, Saintly Fish and 3 others 6 Quote
Andy135 Posted May 28, 2021 Posted May 28, 2021 That's great news Mark. Well done. Nothing like a simple fix that's cheap to solve. 👍 MarkT 1 Quote
MarkT Posted May 28, 2021 Author Posted May 28, 2021 Hi Andy, especially when it was my stupidity in the first place that caused the problem. Great help on here though, really pleased I've found this forum. Saintly Fish and Andy135 2 Quote
