CHAIN

Having just been rambling on about allen screws, I have just thought that some people may not be aware of the correct way to open & close chain links. The link should always be twisted to open and close and Never just prised open to make a gap. This applies to all chain from necklaces to anchor chain. Welded links should be cut through on the weld and then welded back together. Geoff.☺️

You would need to allow for this in the chains load ratings, as any heat treating will be lost and the link will be weaker than it was before.

I guess with mooring chains, they have a shelf life anyway, so would be cheaper and safer to replace in the long run. I've only ever shackled chains together, but that wouldn't work on an anchor chain using a gypsy...
