Popular Post mike farrants Posted April 14, 2023 Popular Post Posted April 14, 2023 (edited) 4 of us out on Seadog for a blast over to lulworth and other spots ahead of the 1st comp of the year in the Weymouth Angling Club boat league. (which is this weekend) We anchored up on lulworth bank 3 of us targeting bream on 2 hook flappers on squid and one on mackerel flapper targetting the big stuff. a few Bream, conger and Dogs, but not much else - fishing was slow. so we pulled the anchor and moved off to the spoils. Similar tactics - produced more fish - including bream, Pout, Scad (very early i guess?), poor cod, & whiting. plus the usual dogs and conger. I switched to a big single bait rig and put on some Squid hoping for a hound - and soon enough i was rewarded with a nice angry smoothhound - so angry we thought tope at first! followed by a smaller smoothie, and then a lovely spotted ray and a small thornie. a very good days fishing - and it was almost warm in the sunshine! Malc Posted April 14, 2023 Posted April 14, 2023 Nice report and buffing nice smoothie too, I've been buffing up my fish ID and I believe that the second dorsal being bigger than the fin below it is one of the features, is that how you normally ID? Quote
mike farrants Posted April 14, 2023 Author Posted April 14, 2023 easy one is stick you finger in its mouth 😄 - seriously though don't do that - Tope have teeth - Smoothounds have crushing pads. Malc 1 Quote
Malc Posted April 14, 2023 Posted April 14, 2023 I have previous with TBR spines and jaws so I won't be doing it that way. It is just because we are in a competition in June and ID is crucial, most online say about the second dorsal and also the lower tail lobe and dentistry will only be looked at from a safety POV. mike farrants Posted April 14, 2023 Author Posted April 14, 2023 ahh for our species comp they usually just want a pic of the mouth if unsure - if the hound happens to be 'starry' - thats an easier ID of them. I think there may be a difference in the eyes - pupil shape - but i'm not certain! Quote
Malc Posted April 14, 2023 Posted April 14, 2023 This is based on length or width as the species are just tope, huss, smoothie, TBR (hence width) and surprisingly, mackerel and the prizes are pretty substantial circa £1000 for tope iirc as well as rods and reels etc so ID could be critical Quote
Andy135 Posted April 14, 2023 Posted April 14, 2023 Looks like a good day out @mike farrants. Good effort, with rewards all round it seems. Top dangling 👍 mike farrants 1 Quote

They don't need it, so somebody should make use of it on their behalf! Quote

There is still a huge debate that smoothounds and starry’s are actually the same specie, just different markings. Most of mine are Starry’s, but we only get smaller fish here (15lb tops), usually high single to low double. Quote
