Skerries Bass ?

Recommended Posts

Going out to the Skerries tomorrow on a charter, got all the usual bling rigs for Plaice and some 4/0 pennels which will hopefully be baited with fresh caught Launce for Turbot

Are there any Bass caught regularly off this mark ?

Will put a small selection of lures in the box, just in case

One for @GPSguru perhaps 👍

I've had bass on redgills from the Earl Stones, which isn't far from the northern tip of the Skerries, but I've never fished the Skerries themselves so I can't say for certain. There are bass all along that stretch of coastline though, so if there's baitfish I'd imagine they'd also be bass.

Good luck and let us know how you get on.

Take the plastic hook guards off before you use them though🤣

Nah, he'll be spotted as an emmet if he does that! All the locals keep the hook guards on 🤣

TBH unlike the the Shambles, there is not a huge Turbot population, certainly not really worth targeting.  Most of the Turbot are found in the overfalls on the start point side of the banks. Launce will more than likely pick up Blonds.  We tend to get 2 or 3 turbot a season, and these fall to plaice rigs.

Expect to be fishing for Plaice, so a bit of bling and 1/0 aberdeens. There are Bass on the banks but usually schoolies. The charters often fish the eastern side of the banks (Dartmouth) where the Plaice are plentiful. We often set up a ‘mack’ rod with size 4 tinsels and that often produces a few snakes.

Most of the Ray fishing is done on the outer edge of the banks at anchor, but small eyed, blonds, and the odd undulate can be found all over the banks, with some of the blonds close to 30lb.

If the weather holds we will be there on Saturday, stopping off at hopes ness or berry head for fresh mack.

Bait ….. take frozen mack, prawn, squid, and sandeel. Every bait you use needs to be tipped with a long thin strip of squid.

Why does Edward Woodward have so many “D’s” in his name ??

Cos if he didn't his name would be Ewar Woowar?

Don't know what i did there!!

We don't fish there anywhere near as much as GPSguru but last year we had a good day on there with plenty of plaice on blinged up traces of ragworm tipped with half a raw prawn then a long sliver of squid. We also dragged half a macky fillet for turbot all day and had a fair few rays, small eyed, blonde and spotted. A couple of the other club boats did find a turbot but they were taken on worm baits after plaice.

It should be a good day, albeit a tad windy, Saturday is the better day, and there are also some promising days next week.

Good work that you're getting back on it Ian. Guessing you're feeling a bit better?
