Popular Post Odyssey
Nice early start at 06:45 to head out west. Wasn’t sure what to expect fishing by wise as early in season. Started at a nice 22 knots cruise. But soon down to being hammered in swell so back to 16knts. 2 hours later chum in water, lines out and we wait. Soon had a nice blue trying to eat floats, so I freeloned a mackerel on its head for fish number 1. Small to medium size at 95-100lb. Ian (@headlight) had a nice run, was a big porgie but snapped his ugly stick and got away. A few tentative runs (typical of porgies) but no hook ups sadly. Another 6 blues later, Ian got his second bit at the cherry and got a little porgie abour 150-160lb. Had a 250-300lb circle the boat. Wouldn’t take a bait. Soon was time to head home. Had a nice chat with HMS Dauntless on the VHF, whixh was interesting 🤣 One other boat out who only managed one porgie so quite pleased with the result and nice to kick off the season. Just need some bigger porgies, a mako, thresher, a blue over 200lb and a few Tuna now for a good season 🤣🤣🤣 thejollysinker, Saintly Fish, captin slows old outlaw and 7 others
Andy135
Quality result! And a fish that snapped an Ugly Stik! Must have been a proper tank. Somehow I don't reckon Ian is too sad about it, given he now has a great fishy tale to tell. Good start to the season 👍
Saintly Fish
Nice one Luke, shame about the rod though @headlight!!
Malc
Nice when a plan comes together, shame about the rod and fish, hopefully it will recover well.

Well there is a surprise 🙄, as rods go, I find them pretty awful. Well done on getting out Luke, another month and the Blues will be there in numbers. It is a shame you couldn't get the big porgie to take a freelined bait, but TBF they can be very fussy eaters at times, and also quite wary of what they eat. We get more porgies than Blues here in Lyme Bay, mainly due to the water generally being 100 - 200ft max. suzook12

Hopefully find a few more porgies as blues arrive en masse in late July and the porgies don’t get a look in but hopefully I’ll try a few night trips in the hopes the porgies are bit easier to find. Ugly Stick is ok for general stuff and has a handled blues ok but it’s the reason why I use quality gear out there as next time it maybe a thresher or mako that takes the bait…. Never know what’s swimming around out there GPSguru

Whats the water temp where you were fishing. I’m not sure on the rod, it split on the reel handle. Seems to be known fault with them under maximum load. Water temp is on the up, not sure what it is currently, warm enough to pass the big toe test that’s all I know 🙄🙄 JDP
