Is this why I lost a couple of knots ?

Recommended Posts

I found this surprise a couple of weeks ago when I went to warm the engine in readiness for an oil change.

At first it appeared to just be the exhaust gasket ...

But after removal, I scrapped a piece of black carbon off and it exposed a hole in the housing...

After many phone calls and high quotes ranging from £1700 - £2450 + vat for a new oem turbo, I managed to find a Turbo specialist who has welded, refurbished and painted the old one to look like new. And with a 1 year warranty.
This will be collected on Friday morning. Pics of the newish unit to follow !

Glad it’s nearly sorted. I remember telling you I suspected your turbo was leaking smoke a month or so back when you asked about the unusual smoke. I’m surprised and disappointed that none of the other so called experts didn’t see it.
How much has the refurbishment cost you? Or more accurately how much did it cost that  little old lady who you changed a washer for today?

So I picked up the refurbed turbo this morning..DBE490F3-FB05-4000-B154-799632E933A8.jpeg.bbd70231afff0b658172b99186475700.jpeg

it looks pretty good to me...

so after parting with £680 + vat, I headed down to the boat to start to fit it on..

4 hours later and an achy back, I’m all connected back up.
just the coolant to re fill tomorrow and then run her up to see how good a job the turbo shop (and me) have done ! 😬

So Pete and I were on the boat at 8.45 this morning. I was hoping that after filling the coolant we could just push off and go on a sea trial. But as these things go it never happened.
fired up the engine and we got a puff of exhaust gas right up Pete’s nose. Oh dear I said.

being that the turbo is in quite an awkward position and yesterday I forgot my glasses, I thought that I’d maybe not aligned things quite right .

so we stripped off the clamp and re aligned. Same problem.
another two attempts with the same results saw me break out the temp gum exhaust paste. Just a slither around each side of the gasket and all was well. No smoke in the engine bay. Horaah !
by this time it was 11am and I had to get home to take Leo for another riveting under 10’s footie match. Leo and his team won comfortably 6-1 !!
Pete, iou a trip out mate 👍🏻

  • 3 weeks later...

So today was the day that I was finally able to get my first mate (Leo) down to the boat for a shake down trip after the fitting of the refurbished turbo. What with work and poor weather chances just didn’t crop up.
But today the stars aligned.

Quick check of the engine bay to make sure the turbo was still connected and not in the bilge, and we were off.

So the engine ran well, no worse than before. Pick up and throttle response seemed a tad quicker. Overall top speed was still lacking 4 knots and revs still down by 150. I’m putting this down to a dirty bum and possibly a dirty propeller?

I think the extra weight of 3 additional batteries doesn’t help much. Still waiting for Andy to help me fit them.

I did however notice an oily patch on my new air filter cover that seems to spray from a breather pipe. Any ideas why this would be ? Plenty of oil still in the engine.

One last shot of the engine bay, just because I took it.

overall I’m happy that the boat still runs as it did, with the bonus of no exhaust smoke in the engine bay.

Is that a factory or aftermarket air filter? I'm wondering whether your engine has a crankcase breather that is supposed to route into the air box after the filter, so that the oil mist is burned rather than vented to atmosphere. Green credentials and all that...
