Saintly Fish Posted January 8, 2023 Posted January 8, 2023 How do you stop this happening?? There is mono backing on this spool. Quote
JDP Posted January 8, 2023 Posted January 8, 2023 (edited) Has the line possibly slipped on the spool ? do you have mono backing under the braid. The braid looks loose quite deep into the spool. Edited January 8, 2023 by JDP Quote

Odyssey Posted January 8, 2023 Posted January 8, 2023 Not enough tension…. Braid needs loads to sit on the spool, it’s still fine to use as-is mind Quote
captin slows old outlaw Posted January 8, 2023 Posted January 8, 2023 i was told to trout it out along way then real it back in. by the time you have picket up sewed , it should be tight . that is what i was told. Quote

Malc Posted January 8, 2023 Posted January 8, 2023 Might be particular to spool width/diameter and line diameter and then the level wind if it isn't happening lower in the spool. Could you put more or less mono backing on and try again? Quote
Odyssey Posted January 8, 2023 Posted January 8, 2023 Other option is to not cotton reel it and try and move the braid accross the spool faster so that the braid crosses itself and then it doesn’t dig in as much Quote
Saintly Fish Posted January 8, 2023 Author Posted January 8, 2023 Not sure I can be bothered to take the lot off and then put it all back on again. It was really a question to try and avoid it for the next respool. Quote

For some reason, the braid has become loose, which means that even with level wind, it will 'dig in' under tension. I would guess that the mono has probably bedded down, causing the braid to loosen. If it were me, then I would rip it off and re-spool with fresh braid, I buy spectra in 1000m spools, so the cost would be negligible. As @JonC say's, run the line off the stern with an 8oz weight on the end and then and wind back on. Doing that, you have nothing to lose, provided you tied a decent mono to braid knot. Quote

Well ok if next time I'm out I find myself with a break in the fishing, I'll let it all out. Quote

mike farrants Posted January 9, 2023 Posted January 9, 2023 my kayak reel has gone a bit like that - (although no where near as bad) - mainly from my bad casting so im taking it out on the boat next time to drop the braid off the back - with the little kayak rod and have some fun with the whiting! if i ever get out on aboat again - this weather! I wonder if getting the braid wet before you load it helps? Quote
