Best of 2022

Nothing massive for me, had plenty of doubles whilst wrecking, but never out of the Bristol Channel

My best Cod out of the BC at 14lb something earlier this year (Jan or Feb I think)

2021-12-20_10-14-17

Oh and my British record Grey Gurnard of course 😁

2022-04-10_09-02-00

Caught on a blue/white Sidewinder copy this April out of Brixham

EDIT

Just checked and the Cod was last December 19th, so doesn't count really

Memorable boat/fishing moments?

Getting out after the tope with the lad, both of us getting smashed up....

Meeting up with Neal and Leo and a day out on Tarlach II

6 Grown men standing round a collapsed bivvy trying to figure out how to get it back in its bag....

And for the wrong reasons, the absolute shite weather for all bar one of 4 tope trips booked

Can't say I'm going to miss this year too much, it's been very lean fish wise, both coarse and sea and the other stuff has been mostly hard work with not a lot of return...... Onwards and upwards....

Come on then guys and gals, best catches of 2022! Not always the biggest maybe the most memorable? Get some pics up 🙂

Memorable parts for me:

Mad spaniel appeared…

Skate to 199lb,

porgies to just under 300lb,

blues to 140lb, BFT to 400lb,

pollack to 9lb

and for first time in years….. lots of mackerel 😍😍😍

Had a nice huss of 18lb 5oz, couple of cod, pouting, wrasse, rays, conger, blue whiting, spur dogs and off course everyone’s favourite…. LSD…

Been a good year, roll on 2023 and hopefully some better autumn weather!

However…. Hats off to @mike farrants for the great reports. Given me a kick up the bum to diversify 2023…. Need to doend more time on the lures…. Oh and to catch a stone bass …

My best on the spin travel rod were these yellowfin and marlin.

I don’t have many pics on my phone, so will need to dig a few more unusual fish on not so commonly used tackle from my computer some time. Must admit though I haven’t put that much effort in over the past year, it’s been shocking weather for much of it.

The fishing has not be prolific for me this year either. Mainly down to time restraints and poor skills. But a couple of highlights were a nice 8.4lb bass and a few double figure stingrays. D9A34FB9-24DD-4D94-92F7-B4673873546E.jpeg.fee640a23998038a3ddffc8dd37a4f33.jpeg

It was great to have @suzook12 and his lad Mikey on TT for the day, we must do that again.
What sticks in my mind the most though is being out on Jersey Girl with @Andy135 and Leo's vastly under gunned rod being taken by something unstoppable whilst out sharking. Isn't it always the way that the big fish go for the small baits not meant for them!!

I will miss going out with Andy on Jersey girl if im honest ☹️
Anyways, here's looking forward to my 50th year and making more time for fishing (🌈).
Good luck to you all, and hopefully a fruitful season. Oh, and maybe I'll get that uninvite to the blackwater!!!

That was a good session, if only for the question of what might have been. I miss Jersey Girl too, but selling up was the right thing for me at present.

I do miss not being a boat owner too. Found myself lying in bed this morning thinking about a RIB again. You, Leo and I have unfinished business on that mark so I expect we'll be back there again before too long. Just need to get the house finished and scratch the Caterham itch before I can invest in another tub.

When I first clicked on that I thought it was the Powerfish.
Did you use whole chooks?

Unfortunately I was on a remote island which had no chooks, closest chook was 1500km. Next time I will try and prepare better.
Heres a powerfish flathead that crawled up the beach near where I camped, recon it would love a chook.

I had a decent day with my pal on his boat, chucking texas rigged jellyworms at a reef that almost dries on some LW. Caught plenty of pollock from 4 lb to nigh on double figures and they fought like demons in the shallow kelpy water on light spinning rods.

On the kayak I had one that was awesome as I managed to pass the bar of the Tyne. It's no mean feat as it kicks up rotten in some tide and wind states and is over a mile from my launch site. I managed codling from a wreck/reef just off the bar the same day, as well as catching mackerel for other boats who need them for bait and added another fish to my list of firsts, a grey Gurnard! A little thing but quite a big thing in a 16ft kayak with ferries, tugs and lots of other marine traffic about. Next year I need a similar day to get to the plaice ground and see what I can get.

Last but should be first was my wife out-catching the rest of the boat in the summer, catching 2 codling at a time even and keeping me busy with the net and helping unhook.

Nice post! Always forget your catches count for double seeing as you're on a yak. Good effort 👍

well - there's a few things stand out for me in only my 2nd season of boat fishing

31 trips out (across mine and my mates boat)

28 species

8 Firsts

13 PBs

highlights:

First and PB Turbot

PB Bass

PB Conger

First Cuckoo

First very rare Red band fish

image.png.ad2c208cf34daaa107de6092f0374a34.png

plus a surprise Sand Smelt & Gold Sinny Wrasse

image.png.ad1b973c19ec7af4201346ff92dc3ad9.png image.png.e8b89b8d2e79d4741b1ccf1c45f5eded.png

also Came 18th in the Small boat species hunt with 22 species (it was a limited list) and won a prize (hookpoint subscription)

Mostly the satisfaction of seeing other catch when i'm in charge - I had been trying to get my mate out for a session for ages - every time he came to stay it would be blown out - but we got one session on a glorious summers day where he had many firsts and PBs and he totally out fished me - a great sense of achievement.

from the shore I had my first Red Mullet, Black bream, Cuttle fish and more!

If you want one, your best chance in the UK will be to take a Charter out to the Shambles gravel banks just off Portland Bill. 👍

this is true - although this one came off the Adamant Shoal and was totally unexpected, my mate had one off the kidney banks too - I did get 2 baby Tubs off the shambles too!
